Recently, people have been asking questions about the "anim" domain names and why i didn't purchased the .com well... here's why. First of all, the shorter the better because it make it easy for people to remember. And secondly the .com version was registered by some guy who want to sell it for a very high price... i mean around 4 to 5 figures so it is out of the question. My only hope now is .CO and i believe within the next five years, I expect .CO to surpass .NET as the second most popular domain extension on the Internet.
Anim.com was registered in 1998 ! At that time, i was just a 14 years old kid without internet !
Seriously, why pay more for the letter "M" ?
I'm not claiming .CO will outshine .COM, because it won't, (25 years of .com) but I did pre-register "anim.co" via landrush. The registrar I used is GoDaddy.
I have asked clueless people if they know what .COM means and heres the answer:
- Computer ?
- Command ?
- Community ?
- Communication ?
- Company ?
- Intercom ?
- Come ?
- Commission ?
- Commodore ?
Those people are non-domainers like my family members, friends and random people on the streets. Some of them doesn't understand english.
.Co on the other hand stand for:
- Company
- Corporation
- Commerce
- Community
And the abbreviation as been around since the 17th century: Wikipedia
Quote
By 1303, the word referred to trade guilds. Usage of company to mean "business association" was first recorded in 1553 and the abbreviation "co." dates from 1769.
"anim dot co" will be available this July 13.
.CO is a unique opportunity offering me a new experience in the branding of my online presence. The .CO extension is assimilated to the notions of visibility, international and credibility. There is a strong sense of attractiveness in these two letters extension and .CO is also highly related to social networks. .CO works perfectly with words such as “COmpany”, “COrporation”, “COmmerce”, “COntent”, “COnnect”, “Communicate”, “COllaborate” and "COmmunity".
.CO is opening a new era and considered to be the world’s next premier web address.
I struggled HARD for those domain names. *I couldn't sleep for 2 days on how depressed i was*
I hope you like them.
25 years after the launch of .COM, there are more than 90 million domain names registered in the .COM extension. The .com domain space is crowded and choosing a recognizable, short domain name is very difficult.
.CO is the evolution of .COM
.CO is designed for the web 3.0
It's 1/3 faster to type...
It's recognizable around the world as the REAL abbreviation of the word "company".
It it used on .CO.UK .CO.JP .CO.IN .CO.NL ...ect
There´s a story behind. Back in 1995 .co was a serious candidate to be the prime top level domain. As we all know .com was launched instead. Why .com instead of .co? .co is even one character less and just as easy to remember. After the initial rejection, the idea behind .co stuck however, and many country hostmasters introduced later their top level domain with .co. To name a few; co.uk, co.in, co.hu etc. Anyway, justice for all, now 15 years later .co is finally launched for the general public on 20th July 2010.
it's real simple everybody...
This extension is dependent on ONE thing and ONE thing only
... HOW GOOGLE decides to handle it.
Type in traffic is almost an old school way of thinking...
... today we market LINKS, LINKS, LINKS... whether it be in Twitter, or facebook, or paying google to be on page one... it's embedded in ALL our emails and all of our smart phones and personalized bookmarks are all linked together as well... how about TINY URL?... they send more traffic then you ever will alone, and there's not a thing to look at when you click that link.
Even the worst domain name in the world can be HUGELY successful on the web if they PAY for the links and the placement, right?
People go to google, they type in a search term, and 'usually' click the link that best matches their search... whether organic or paid, this is what it has become... let's not fool ourselves... this really DOES have the potential to be the NEXT WAVE.
If the BIG G is going to handle this extension as a gTLD - allow it proper placement for any search term - it will EASILY reach the dot-com's stratosphere.
You all talk about 'habits' and how everyone will ONLY remember the dot com... this is about as much an assumption as everyone buying these names.
Habits break!!
let me ask you all... hasn't DOT CO become VERY (somewhat) familiar to you ALREADY?... if you say no , you're most likely only approaching 'familiar' but already well on your way to considering it second nature.... this is SUCH a dramatic point.
Does it look like a typo TODAY?.. sure..
...but talk to me in a month ..
...talk to me in 6 months...
... talk to me in a year and tell me it STILL looks like a typo.
cause it WON'T!
like when touch screen smartphones first came out and everyone swore that no one will ever adopt a touch screen keypad. "it'll never take"
haha .. how's that working out for everybody now?
There might be some stubborn ones left, but eventually, they'll all fall in love with it when they stop fighting it and will probably give a another fight once full gesture or holographics takes over.
how about the habit of the AOL user?...
it may have taken that change a little bit longer to fully WAKE THOSE ignorant SOB's up, but they've finally realized that AOL was GARBAGE and are thankful that they've FINALLY switched over.
although they do still have some loyal users CLINGING FOR DEAR LIFE, but that's a flatline waiting to happen.)
...so.. guess what?...
change happened... and so many people can't imagine anything else but what they changed into anymore.... for whatever reason, some people's human dna is to resist and fight change with every drop of what they are, but eventually they all give in.
... this seems to be another example of that regardless how blatant the writing on the wall is... but given time, this will adapt and even then, make much more sense.
I'm so happy... I've been waiting for this for years and now i have it.

I'm not 100% sure what Anim is suppose to refer to. I'm guessing short for Animation?
Just like .com is short for "commercial"... "anim" is:
abbreviation for "animation"
typo for "animal" "animes" "animus"
a file extension
number six in tagalog
Like i said on my blog, Anime may be linguistically the abbreviation of "animation". But around the world, anime is always associated with japanese cartoons. But my main goal is to focus on international animation/cartoons and not just japanese animation/cartoons so that's why choose "Anim" because it's short for animation.
The name idea came from popular 3D animation programs such as Autodesk Maya, Softimage, 3DSmax... they use "anim" to abbreviate "animation" on their buttons:
It's very short and easy to remember.
If it's too hard to remember... Well... i have http://anim.al/ "animal"
I will at least mention the reasons that I feel that I made a strong investment going with .co
1) google has announced that it will be indexed like a neutral tld
2) .co.uk, .co.il, .co.jp, .co.etc… I don’t need to spell this reason out
3). it was an original choice for a tld back when the dinosaurs were roaming the internet so it is obviously highly desirable
4). it comes with a free toy
5). I spent some $$$ on these domains so it bloody better be popular
6). I like to pronounce it dot-cah
7). lots of new startups can get some snappy names and develop them
8). t.co and others will give it legitimacy in it’s infancy
